A Letter From PhDJ
Below is message from Boundary Sounds' head honcho and creator, Martin aka PhDJ, sharing his feelings on the Abercrombie and what is to become of Sneakers for 2010.
The image of PhDJ used in the top right hand corner of the collage above was taken at the very first Purple Sneakers way back on the 6th May, 2005. History.
Hello friends of Boundary Sounds.
This is a personal message from me to all of you. I don't often send personal messages in bulk like this however I was inspired by a friend of mine from Los Angeles Franki Chan (owner of IHEARTCOMIX, DJ, businessman, blogger and visual
artist) who last week put his heart on his sleeve and let the world to read his thoughts.
I urge you to read his letter at IHEARTCOMIX - about a year in the life of a creative dude. It's written from the heart and taps into what most small business people have at some point felt.
What Franki wrote is almost word for word what I and my company Boundary Sounds experienced a couple of years ago. And even now almost every day I question the forces that pull between my creative desires and the need to keep an events/artists company and its employees in business. Beneath all the parties and all the fun times and all the music and all the high fives and brave faces are real people dealing with real financial, business and organizational pressures. But as a business owner there are also the personal internal pressure of questioning whether you are doing the right thing by the people who work for you, and even more importantly whether you are doing justice to your own dreams and visions.
There is always a struggle between the business and the creative part of your self and your brain. Quite often the two can conflict and can even act detrimentally toward each other. The key is to find a balance between the two.
It seems appropriate that this message comes at a time when we are moving venues for Purple Sneakers. I started Purple Sneakers in 2005 not in order to start a club but as a way to employ myself after having come back from 3 years living in London and with the vision to use the money that the club made to release records for local bands that I love. Now 5 years, countless parties, tours, artists and records later we are at a crossroads. We are being forced to move from our spiritual home The Abercrombie Hotel where it all started years ago.
We could and probably will lament the closure of the venue, however the key is not the building, it is the party and the spirit of the event that makes up the heart and soul of Purple Sneakers. And with every loss comes a new beginning and this means not only an exciting new venue in Sydney but also re-starting Purple Sneakers in Canberra and commencing work on Purple Sneakers in Melbourne.
I want to thank the amazing staff that work at Boundary Sounds, all the staff and interns who have previously helped out in the office and all the DJs who have taken to the deck at Sneakers. Plus a big thank you and much love to Tim who has recently left us but is an amazing friend and DJ. And of course to all the punters that come to our events again and again, having as much fun as possible and making this business a reality.
And even though LA is the other side of the world if any of you reading this can provide support to IHEARTCOMIX by buying any of their music or videos or simply just passing the IHEARTCOMIX link to your friends then please do ‘cos like Boundary Sounds, IHEARTCOMIX is just a small business trying to make it work in the world!
