What Pushes Our Social Snappers Buttons?

In celebration of our 3rd Annual Social Snaps Exhibition this Friday we grabbed a couple of our featured photographers, Maja Baska and Jacquie Manning, and asked them a couple of quick questions about what pushes their snap-happy buttons.

Maja Baska
H
ow did you get started? I started working as an assistant for my mum on weddings when I was nine. She was pregnant with my little brother so I would carry gear, hold reflectors and fool around to make people smile. I started messing around with film cameras when I was 12 and used to spend hours fiddling in the darkroom. I got my first digital camera about 5 years ago while working as an assist for a photographer in Hong Kong and have been working ever since.

Most memorable shot ever taken? Once I brought speech bubbles to sneakers, and got people to write on them. One guy wrote "I need to pee so bad I can taste it." Possibly the funniest and most memorable photo I've taken at sneakers. But there are plenty more.

Best experience while taking photos at Sneakers? It was during the time that sneakers was at Herman's and there was a guy who was really good at capoeira. He jumped up on a pole and made his body on a 90degree angle to the pole. It was definitely one of the best moments, because how often do you see a guy do that!

Things you wish people said when you asked to take their photo? What people always say is: "would you like me to take my shirt off?", "I'll have to charge you for this", "I'll have to ask my agent", "He's a famous soccer player, get a photo of him", "can you get in the photo?" I love it when people say anything else but this.

Photographer that most inspires you? I think it would have to be Terry Richardson. I love his relaxed, observational fashion and editorial photography. His shots remind me Nan Goldin's work. He's so cool because he has brought the snapshot style into today's world of commercial photography. He's massive, respect.

Jacquie Manning
How did you get started?
I bought my Digital SLR for an elective at art school but the class got cancelled, so I started out shooting for the BRAG to put it to good use.

Most memorable shot ever taken? One time a guy dropped his trousers and spread his cheeks for me...I had to delete it, his hygiene turned out to be questionable after zooming in. Don't ask me why I zoomed, I just did.

Best experience while taking photos at Sneakers? Shooting Halloween last year! It was such a good vibe that night and the costumes were so amazing it made it really fun to photograph. I was this crazed Cruella De Ville with a camera pulling my Dalmatian victim (Seabas) around with me by a leash. My favourite costume would have to be my friend Luke who came as a 7 foot tall Amy Winehouse in drag!

Things you wish people said when you asked to take their photo? Nothing! Saying over and over again that the pictures will be on the website gets really tiring when you're screaming over loud music.

Photographer that most inspires you? David Lachapelle is incredibly inspiring, but locally I'd have to say Daniel Boud's shots of Nick Cave are amazing! Also, my fellow exhibitor Maja has a really refreshing style, because she has a different theme for every night, with props - it keeps it fun.

Launching This Week...

Norway's Datarock have returned with the follow up to the geek-chic party album of 2005, Datarock Datarock.

Their debut mixed Happy Mondays punk-funk with warped Devo humour, and was well received locally with Computer Camp Love landing #12 on Triple J's Hottest 100. The new album Red has lost none of Fredrik and musical partner Ketil Mosnes' aptitude for so-classic-you-must-haveheard-it-before hooks, but this follow-up is an altogether more concept-driven beast.

As an album, Red is a thoroughly unashamed love-letter to the influences that made Datarock what they are today.
DEVO, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Talking Heads, Haruki Murakami, Don Delilo's White Noise, Scott Walker, the works of John Hughes and Peter Greenaway, and even Molly Ringwald (in the song Molly) are all referenced. Pop cultural fluff that is meaningful because invoking them now as adults is a sharp reminder from a more innocent time that we should ALWAYS be having more fun than we are right now.

Win Win Win
Want a copy of ‘Red'. Oooh yeah. Then send an email with Datarock in the subject line to lovers@boundarysounds.com and tell us what attire do Datarock don for their onstage performances?
