Boundary Bonds With... Mark Drew of China Heights

This week Boundary Bonds with the manager of one of the coolest gallery spaces in Sydney, China Heights.

What is China Heights?
China Heights is a Gallery in Surry Hills, Sydney, just entering its 5th year.

What would you say was the major influence to run a gallery?
Edward Woodley and I started the gallery in 2004 due to a lack of spaces that showed (or were willing to show) the kind of work we liked and wanted to promote. Artwork from a fashion, music or design perspective. We knew enough people were already making the work (including ourselves), but there was no real suitable central venue.

Have you ever had any exhibitions which had been not quite what you expected?
We've had over 100 launches now, so there have been a few surprises. We organise some shows solely via email, so I guess the surprise sometimes is finding out who we're actually dealing with - the oldest of which was 62! The warehouse style space appeals to a wide range of people not just the artists and we get a pretty interesting cross section regularly turning up to openings.

Who would be your ultimate artist to exhibit?
We exhibit a lot of people in the early stages of their career - not knowing where people will end up, after first showing at China Heights is one of the things I enjoy about this work - rather than big 'dead or alive' names. But I wonder what a show by Corey Feldman would be like?
