The Black kids are five young kiddos from Florida. Initially, they sound young, very young and they remind me of Operator Please but not as annoying and with a little more MGMT and perhaps some Hot Hot Heat? - It balances out. Sounding young isn't such a bad thing though; the music is complementary enough to appeal not just to the kids and to the kids at heart.
While it all starts of very tweeny, by track four ‘Hurricane Jane' we start to see real depth in The Black Kids, This track is really sophisticated (if you ignore the silly lyrics, which I can) and is followed by the equally sweet, more mature again ‘I'm Making eyes at you' and ‘I've Underestimated My Charm (Again), In fact, this whole album flows like some kind of journey of self discovery, Starting off slightly juvenile, it become more and more self aware, more mature and with more tragic subject matter in the undisputed hit ‘I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boy ect ect' , ‘Love Me Already' and the discotheque wonder of ‘I Wanna Be Your Limousine' and ‘Look At Me (When I Rock Witchoo)" ha!
This debut album is really easy to listen to, it's full of radio friendly hooks and everything is at that typical BPM that lends itself to the indie club dance floors as well as any potential club remixes.
I like it.
